Half Of Brits Have Been 'Taken For A Ride' By Workmen
Housing slump gets homeowners doing it for themselves
Thursday 14th August 2008
Nearly half of homeowners (46%) feel that they have been ripped off by workmen in the past. These concerns have prompted 62% of people to take on home improvement work themselves, with a view to eventually selling up when the property market has returned to a healthier state.
Only 36% of people say they have always been fairly quoted by workmen, according to new research by mydeco, the UK's number one online home ware retailer. The property slump is forcing Britain's homeowners to stay put rather than move house, and the resulting need to improve their existing homes has led to increasing fears about being ripped off by cowboy tradesmen.
Yet this drive to self-sufficiency creates problems of its own. Certain property 'upgrades' such as adding a swimming pool or conservatory won't actually increase your property value - in fact you're likely to end up out of pocket. Yet interiors improvements, like repainting or decoration are likely to add significant value, leaving you in profit and more able to sell your home.
But how are non-professionals supposed to know which improvements will best increase the value of their property? And is it feasible to make these improvements without bankrupting oneself in the process?
